Old Town Real Estate

Old Town San Diego is one of the city's most popular tourist attractions. But what many don't realize is that it's also a fantastic place to live, with unique homes and interesting entertainment in your own backyard.

Old Town real estate lines the borders of this area, with homes clustered on residential streets out of the sight of tourists and those in town for a night of Mexican food. In keeping with the theme of the area, many of the homes have been influenced by the early days of San Diego and the permeation of Mexican culture. That means that the houses—many originally Craftsman homes—now have stucco or bright coats of paint on them, and many keep yards full of flowers or cactus instead of a lawn. In February 2006, the average home sales price was $424,785.

This is not the place to live for a family which wants a huge yard for the kids to play in; the homes were built close together and there is not a lot of room to expand. It is a great place, however, for a family that wants to live in a unique place where you can get to know your neighbors and appreciate the culture around you. As one of just 1,000 residents, this is almost certain to be your experience. Old Town residents are often those who sell their craft in one of the nearby stores, so you'll be surrounded by artists and artisans.

And just a few minutes' walk from your front porch will be the wonders of Old Town. Here, historic buildings house shops selling original art, indigenous crafts and souvenirs. It's also the best place to get authentic Mexican food in all of San Diego. On some holidays, actors reenact historical scenes, and in the summer street performers come out and entertain. Tourists and children alike get a great feeling for what San Diego was like at the turn of the century.
