The demographic in the area is mostly young families, many of whom are stationed at the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station. This means that there's a lot of unity in the area, which carries over into great neighborhood organizations. Kids are involved in Scouting, school organizations and sports teams organized by local recreation centers.

Families also congregate around Lake Miramar on the weekends, where they can fish or take small boats out. Miramar's community college has a swimming pool that local residents can swim in. The college also hosts recreational and cultural activities throughout the year at little or no cost. Many of Mira Mesa's adults opt to also take classes there for significantly less than what they would pay at a four-year university. While many stay in for long enough to earn an associate's degree, others just take courses to enhance their education and to meet people.

Mira Mesa has virtually every type of home you might be looking for—from single family detached homes to apartments and condominiums. Towards the fringes of the area, some homes have panoramic views of the canyons and hills. And the homes sell for less than comparable homes in nearby areas. The average home is priced at around $390,000, but can range from the low $200,000s to $600,000. The average Mira Mesa single family home or condo sold for $467,985 in February 2006.
