Many of Imperial Beach's residents are Naval officers who report to work at nearby Ream Field, a helicopter training base on North Island. There are a few business centers in Imperial Beach, mostly centered on small business, but still many commute to work downtown via public transportation. Imperial Beach's bus lines make a quick connect to the trolley, and it's one of the most convenient places in San Diego County to live if you plan on relying on public transportation.

These improvements, conjoined with those made to many of the city's homes, means that property value in Imperial Beach has been climbing. Buying real estate in Imperial Beach is one of the best investments you can make in San Diego County if you want a great return on your money. The recent report in February 2006 shows that the average home sales price in Imperial Beach was $519,516.
