Balboa Park Real Estate

Balboa Park is one of San Diego's most memorable landmarks. Running as a green vein throughout part of the city, the park functions as a place for recreation, education and tranquility all in one. From its museums to its world-famous zoo to the wide open lawns where residents can bring their dogs or sit with a picnic lunch, it truly is one of San Diego's most beloved open spaces.

The park lies on the eastern border of downtown and its bell tower can be heard permeating the air on most days. Dedicated as a public park in 1865, Balboa Park has been protected from development since, and before any changes are made, they undergo a strict review. This means that all of Balboa Park is carefully planned and maintained, and its beauty remains protected. The original intention of the park was to ensure that San Diego would always have green space, and it has held true to its promise as the city expands even more rapidly than its founders would have expected.

The landmarks of Balboa Park were created during the 1915-1916 Panama-California Exposition. Ironically, what are now famous buildings were originally created for temporary use as exhibition halls. Instead, these gorgeous pieces of architecture are now mainly used for housing San Diego's largest grouping of museums, including those dedicated to art, natural history, photography and more. This Spanish Colonial Revival architecture is almost impossible to find outside of California, and groups come in from all over the country to admire and photograph it.

The other main attraction of Balboa Park is the San Diego Zoo, widely considered the best in the country. But as people enter Balboa Park for this attraction, they are also drawn to things like the Japanese Friendship Garden, the kid's carousel and the Old Globe Theater, which is a replica of the Globe Theater in England.

While there is no real estate for private homes in Balboa Park, large homes line the streets bordering the park and real estate there is spectacular. The average sales price for these homes was $680,811 in February 2006. If you're interested in living near the park, check out property in Hillcrest and North Park.
